Eligibility: The HBCU Design Challenge Contest (“Contest”) is open to residents of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, 18 or older at the time of entry, who are currently enrolled in a Historically Black College or University (‘HBCU”). Employees of Target, its affiliates, subsidiaries and their immediate families are not eligible to participate in the Contest. Void where prohibited by law.
Contest Period: Entries can be submitted beginning October 16, 2023 until 11:59 PM CST on November 16, 2023.
How to Enter: Following the detailed procedures identified on the HBCU Design Challenge website, Contest Participants (‘Participants”) have the opportunity to submit an entry based on the “Design Project” description and criteria. Participants are eligible to have only one entry become a contest finalist or winner. Submit only original designs for this competition. Designs that have been previously used in any commercial manner (e.g., for sale with anyone else) are not eligible for this Contest.
Judging Criteria: Entries submitted will be judged by a company-wide cross- functional team. The decisions of the judges are final. We will be looking for design solutions that meet the following six (6) criteria:
- Superior Design and Aesthetic Sensibility;
- Exemplifies Creativity and Original Thinking;
- Clearly Articulates a Solution to the Surfaced Design Question;
- Positive Impact on the Guests we Serve and the Communities we Operate in
- Ability to be executed Physically on Apparel/Accessories;
- Ability to be Sold in Target Stores and Online
Use of AI Tools: AI tools may be used as long as the following conditions are met:
(1) The Entry must have significant contributions from Participant,
(2) Participant must disclose which AI tool was used,
(3) Participant must disclose the original AI generated design, and
(4) Participant must ensure that the terms of service for the AI tool allow them to own the design, transfer ownership to Target and allow commercial use.
Prizes: There are a total of six (4) Contest Prize winners.
First Place Prize Winners (2) - Total Value $6000-$8000:

$2000 minimum as Marketing compensation (“Marketing Prize”).Approximately $2000. Winners will be eligible to apply for a six week paid virtual apprenticeship with the Target Owned Brands Product Design team. A maximum of one (1) winner may be invited to participate in the apprenticeship.

Possibility of having their winning design included in the Target Black History Month product assortment for sale in 2025.
- Their story will be featured in our Black History Month 2025 marketing program.

Winner Selection & Notification:
- Contest Finalists will be notified by email on approximately December 1, 2023.
- First Place Prize Winners will be notified by email on approximately January 28, 2024.
- Cash prizes will be awarded and apprenticeship notification by September 1, 2024.
- Marketing Prizes will be awarded by December 31, 2024.
Design Ownership and Attribution:
- Each First Place Prize Winner must sign an agreement to assign ownership of all rights in the winning design to Target in order to receive the Prizes.
- Participant may display the winning design in their portfolio publicly after the BHM (Black History Month) assortment has set in stores (February 2025), but not prior .
- Participant may not make commercial use or any other use of the winning design in the future. Target may or may not use the winning design on products for sale or in marketing or advertising.
- Each First Place Prize Winner agrees that Target may make revisions and changes to winning design and Participant will not have the ability to review or approve any revisions.
- Each First Place Prize Winner agrees that their name and image may be used to give credit as the artist.
Acknowledgments: By participating in this Contest, Participants are confirming that they understand that submitted concepts may or may not be part of Target’s previous, current or future business endeavors. By uploading a submission, Participant agrees to give Target a royalty free, irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, license for incidental use of their submission in any form, media or technology now known or later developed, only for historical, promotional or marketing purposes (not for use on products) if they are winners in the competition.
Documents: All First Place Prize Winners and Runner-Up Prize Winners will be required to execute and return a Release/Wavier Agreement and W-9. In addition, First Place Winners will be required to execute and return a Conveyance of Intellectual Property Agreement that will assign all rights in the winning design to Target. No prizes will be awarded to an individual until they have met these requirement. Finalists are responsible for any prize taxes and will be issued an IRS form 1099 where required by law.

Participation in the HBCU Design Challenge is entirely voluntary and does not create an employment relationship with Target. Individuals who do choose to participate will not be compensated for the time spent on their submission or for their submitted artwork.
