2025 Target HBCU Design Challenge History
The Black History Month HBCU Design Challenge is a competition that was developed in partnership with Targets Design team (OBPD & M), Talent Acquisition, D&I, Merchandising and Marketing teams to deliver on a new way to deepen our connection and impact with HBCU students across the country. We are creating a modern approach where participants can build skills, experience and gain exposure to Target in what we hope will strengthen our guest and employment brand perception.
History of the Target HBCU Design Challenge
Target was the first retailer to partner with HBCUs with a design competition that features HBCU students outstanding designs. With the 2025 Target Challenge, we are on our sixth year with engaging students in a truly Target way. We are so proud of the ongoing partnerships we have built with the students who have participated in our competition. Post winning in our competition, some have gone on to be featured in online video campaigns and commercials for Target. Some have had their work featured within other Target owned-brands, and had apprenticeships and contract work for the brand. See below for a history of past winners and winning designs.
New this year, we have engaged with HBCU professors in support of their students ambitions and development to evolve and scope the challenge. As a result, not only have some of the contest deliverables evolved, but also professors from winning schools will be able to meet our teams and take part in product and design development conversations.
Our Target Black History Month team is always looking for ways to help Target create an even deeper connection with our guests and our community. HBCU students and grads offer a unique perspective. We love the idea of cultivating relationships that put Target into consideration as applicants look for new career options and welcome suggestions for ways to grow our connections!
