As a Lead Engineer, you serve as the technical anchor for the engineering team that supports a product. You create, own and are responsible for the application architecture that best serves the product in its functional and non-functional needs. You identify and drive architectural changes to accelerate feature development or improve the quality of service (or both). You have deep and broad engineering skills and are capable of standing up an architecture in its whole on your own, but you choose to influence a wider team by acting as a “force multiplier.”
Mission and Overview
The Stores and Supply Chain Engineering Team is driven by a mission to delight our guests by ensuring that Target’s products are available in the right place, at the right quantity, and at the right time. Our focus is on delivering a seamless and reliable shopping experience through the most efficient, secure, and fast checkout, payment, and returns systems. Supporting over 2,000 stores across the U.S., our team powers the backbone of Target’s operations—an extensive supply chain network of 50+ warehouses and a robust transportation fleet moving $19 billion of inventory annually to stores and fulfillment centers. This network enables a variety of fulfillment methods, from distribution centers to in-store solutions, ensuring flexibility and convenience for our guests.
At the core of our operations are the applications and services we develop to empower over 500,000 team members across stores and distribution centers. These tools ensure that our products are always available to meet guest needs. Our systems also support a superior Target shopping experience, powering 60,000+ registers, self-checkout kiosks, and mobile point-of-sale devices.
What We Do
The team builds and maintains critical systems that act as the authoritative sources for inventory movement and logistics decision-making across Target’s supply chain. These systems enable:
- Dynamic Logistics Pathways: Supporting flexible and adaptive connections within the supply chain to meet evolving business needs and ensure timely deliveries.
- Optimized Inventory Flow: Accurately determining how goods are forecasted, purchased, and transferred to ensure availability where and when guests need them.
- Streamlined Operations: Empowering teams with the tools to efficiently manage and validate inventory movements while reducing errors and delays.
By focusing on scalability, performance, and accuracy, our systems lay the foundation for a highly efficient and adaptive supply chain network.
Innovation and Growth
Looking to the future, we are expanding our capabilities to incorporate advanced data-driven insights and predictive analytics. This includes collaborating with data scientists to leverage machine learning models for enterprise-wide demand forecasting. These efforts will enable more accurate predictions and smarter replenishment strategies, improving operational efficiency and guest satisfaction.
