Position Overview

Principal Enterprise Architects are recognized as high impact and practical technologists in engineering design and architecture; the scope of their influence spans across the entire company. They identify stakeholder needs, apply industry knowledge, and devise technology to address those needs. They thrive in ambiguity and move quickly, effectively to bring clarity to situations and disparate audiences.

The Principal Software Architect is a critical, high-impact role responsible for the overall technical vision and architecture of our product portfolio. As a key leader, you will work closely with senior executives, product managers, engineers, and stakeholders to create solutions that are scalable, durable, and simple. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, strategic thinking, influence across both business/technical groups and a hands-on approach to problem solving.

Key Responsibilities

 • Engage and collaborate with business stakeholders, officers, product management groups and technical teams to understand business opportunities pain points

• Given future leading business strategy, you will then bridge/translate that strategy into technical strategy; define, refine, and execute architecture vision. Where the articulation of the business strategy is missing, lead the conversation to understand the desired outcomes and value that we need to deliver for our guests.

• Design high-volume, low-latency architectures for mission-critical applications

• Demonstrated ease in adjusting communications from the CIO to officers in the

business teams all the way down to software engineers; proficiency in explaining the

technical minutiae as well as the forward leading business aspirations

• Provide architectural oversight throughout all phases of implementation

• Lead in setting the NorthStar architecture and in the phased roadmaps where business

value is delivered consistently and incrementally.

• Act as a technical advisor for executive leadership on emerging technologies and software engineering practices.

• Lead architecture reviews and create design documents that ensure consistency and optimization across the entire product range.

• Develop architectural patterns and guidelines to improve software quality, performance, and reliability.

Qualifications

• A minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field OR demonstrated experience working on large, transformational projects with a proven ability to bring disparate technical teams together around a shared architectural vision

• Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in an architectural or leadership role.

• A proven track record in leading highly complex engineering projects, involving diverse stakeholders and spanning many business units.

• Proven track record of designing and implementing complex, scalable systems.

• Expert programming skills in multiple languages (e.g., Java, C++, Python).

• Expertise in cloud computing, microservices, data structures, and algorithms.

• Deep understanding of cybersecurity best practices.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing frameworks is a plus.

 • Experience in making contributions to the architecture function within their company, such as development of training, or contributions to engineering standards and best practices. They must also contribute to the development of other architects through teaching, coaching, and/or mentoring.

This position may be considered for a Remote or Hybrid (known internally at Target as "Flex for Your Day") work arrangement based on Target's needs.  A Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at a Target location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.  A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role may be performed either remote or onsite at a Target location depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day. Work duties cannot be performed outside of the country of the primary work location, unless otherwise prescribed by Target.
