Assets Protection Director - Houston, TX

As a market leader of store teams, your role is to enable your team to deliver a destination shopping experience by providing a safe and secure environment for our guests, mitigate shortage risks in order to drive sales, improve accuracy and in-stocks through theft prevention and resolution, and lead through crisis events to protect our guest, team and brand.


The AP team’s function is to provide a safe and secure environment for our team members and guests, and meet the financial goals of shortage and profitability in a Target store. AP teams will do this by leading a physical security and safety culture and responding to crisis events, investigating and resolving theft, and creating awareness and educating team members on operational shortage priorities.

  • Skills in business financials (e.g., payroll, profit and loss) and driving shortage reduction
  • Skills in driving market specific business strategies by leveraging data and metrics and partnering with group leaders to deliver results through your team
  • Experience managing a large remote team in Assets Protection through multiple layers, in a multi-unit market
  • Experience influencing talent strategies for multi-unit markets and building skills in recruiting, selecting, and talent development for exempt leaders in Assets Protection
  • Ability to influence and provide thoughtful feedback to key partners (e.g. Group/District leadership, HR, HQ) to support company strategies and Assets Protection initiatives

As an Assets Protection Director no two days are ever the same, but a typical day will most likely include the following responsibilities:

Drive your business to grow sales ​

  • Lead, influence and validate a safe and secure culture by driving physical security process; leading market response in emergency crisis and significant security situations
  • Develop and communicate group AP strategies and priorities, including tactical plans and expectations, to your team, peers and leadership
  • Be financially accountable in your group by prioritizing and driving continuous improvement. Establish a culture of accountability for your teams through clear expectations and performance management
  • Train and validate the team to anticipate and identify shortage risks in key divisions and developing tactics to reduce shortage and drive profitable sales; lead a shortage prevention and resolution culture to ensure product is in stock and available for our guests
  • Lead and execute company theft and fraud programs in the group. Drive group results on prevention, resolution and apprehension of theft according to compliance standards

Cultivate a guest-centric salesforce to drive sales and efficiency ​

  • Lead a confident and skilled AP team remotely that enables a frictionless environment, supports store teams and delivers a profitable business
  • Develop a talent strategy that makes Target an employer of choice, attracts candidates and invests in team development to retain talent
  • Foster an inclusive, diverse, safe and secure culture; create an environment of openness, trust and recognition and reward great performance
  • Build relationships inside and outside Target, including group leadership, headquarters, law enforcement and industry partners to identify market trends and understand asset protection strategies of competition. Ensure our teams and tactics maintain Target’s reputation
  • Invest in your team to teach them how to be effective leaders of leaders and demand consistently high performance
  • Lead safety programs and best practices within the group and evaluate injury trends to prevent future incidents
  • Demonstrate a culture of ethical conduct, safety, and compliance. Lead team to work in the same way and hold others accountable to this commitment
  • All other duties based on business needs

The good news is that we have some amazing training that will help teach you everything you need to know to be an Assets Protection Director. But there are a few skills you should have from the get-go:

  • 4 year degree or equivalent experience
  • 6+ years of retail loss prevention experience
  • Meet any state or local licensure and/or other legal requirements related to the position
  • Lead strategic vision and drive organizational change
  • Experience influencing key business partners
  • Operate in an ambiguous and rapidly changing work environment
  • Proven experience quickly adapting to changing priorities and tasks
  • Project and process management/ownership experience
  • Work in high intensity situations with composure and ease
  • Strong process background as well as critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Establish and maintain cross-functional working relationships

  • Understanding of retail operations and associated shortage risks
  • Experience with crisis response, physical security, safety and compliance programs
