A role with the Design team means a big opportunity to start from scratch and create something truly original. Are you a design expert who can support your business by staying one step ahead of industry trends, new materials, and techniques? Can you demonstrate the utmost attention to detail and create products that are unprecedented in the marketplace for their design and quality for the price? Then you’ll have success on our Design team who owns the design and development of all Target-owned brands, from apparel to home goods, and beauty to essentials. In close partnership with our merchant and sourcing counterparts, you’ll drive brand cohesion and continuity, ensuring that our products meet the merchant line plans, assortment strategies, price points and overall creative direction.

As a Principal Designer of Denim, you will be a design expert and leader of the category. You will use your extensive breadth and depth of specialized knowledge and experience to drive innovation, lead product development, provide training and mentoring, and develop both internal and external relationships.

In your role, you will establish an overall baseline of expectations for your category or department, highlight their value and impact to the organization, assess both business need and candidate readiness, and ensure consistent application across the Merchandising pyramid. You will have the highest scope, complexity, quality, and quantity for your expertise. You’ll be recognized as the expert in your field and be the “go-to” resource inside Target, which means staying abreast of, and often driving, shifts and trends within your field. You’ll typically be assigned to complex and strategically important projects, businesses, brand launches, and enterprise initiatives. You’ll need to work independently, driving strategies with little input from your leader while understanding business concepts and incorporating business information into your work along the way.

As a subject matter expert and a leader, you’ll mentor and coach others with a passion. You’ll also build and maintain highly functioning relationships up, down and across levels and pyramids within Target. With regards to external partnerships, you will consistently engage with trade organizations, often in a leadership capacity, in order to bring external info, insights and trends to Target Corporation. You’ll then utilize this information to inspire, educate and drive continuous improvement at Target. About You:

  • Four-year degree in Design, Fine Art or similar related field, or equivalent experience

  • 10+ years of industry experience in denim specific category building brands

  • Deep knowledge and industry understanding denim industry, fabrics, and washes

  • Ability to build seasonal denim concepts, identify trend and execute product that supports vision

  • Strong problem solving, creative thinking, and project management skills

  • Manager or leader of people skills

  • Excellent collaboration and partnership skills

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to think strategically and conceptually

  • Business understanding and acumen

  • Photoshop/Illustrator or basic computer design system skills

  • Ability to research and apply market/trend information, commercial sense, and market knowledge
