Eligibility: The HBCU Mural Challenge Contest (“Contest”) is open to residents of the 50 States and the District of Columbia, 18 or older at the time of entry, who are currently enrolled in a Historically Black College or University (‘HBCU”). Employees of Target, its affiliates, subsidiaries and their immediate families are not eligible to participate in the Contest. Void where prohibited by law.
Contest Period: Entries can be submitted beginning February 26, 2024 until 11:59 PM CST on April 7, 2024.
How to Enter: Following the detailed procedures identified on the HBCU Mural Challenge website, Contest Participants (‘Participants”) have the opportunity to submit multiple entries based on the “Mural Challenge” description and criteria. Participants are eligible to have only one entry become a winner. Submit only original designs for this competition. Designs that have been previously used in any commercial manner (e.g., for sale with anyone else) are not eligible for this Contest.
Judging Criteria: Entries submitted will be judged by a company-wide cross-functional team. The decisions of the judges are final. We will be looking for mural solutions that meet the following seven (7) criteria:
- Superior design and aesthetic sensibility;
- Exemplifies creativity and original thinking;
- Does not infringe on copyrights or intellectual property;
- Clearly articulates a solution to the design question;
- Positive impact on the guests and communities we serve in Atlanta, GA;
- Target red as an accent color;
- Ability to be executed physically on wallpaper
Use of AI Tools: AI tools may not be used in whole or in part.
Prizes: There are five (5) Contest Prize winners.
First Place Prize Winners (5) - Total Value $5000:
- $5000 Cash prize
- Exclusive 2-hour consultation with Target senior design leaders.
- Possibility of having their winning mural design installed in a Target store.
All Participants Receive:
- The opportunity to add The HBCU Mural Challenge as a line item on their resume.
Winner Selection & Notification:
- First Place Prize Winners will be notified by email on approximately April 15, 2024.
- Cash prizes will be awarded by September 1, 2024.
Design Ownership and Attribution:
- Each First Place Prize Winner must sign an agreement to assign ownership of all rights in the winning design to Target in order to receive the Prizes.
- Participant may display the winning design in their portfolio publicly after final approval of their design on approximately April 30, 2024, but not prior.
- Participant may not make commercial use or any other use of the winning design in the future. Target may or may not use the winning mural design in stores or in marketing or advertising.
- Each First Place Prize Winner agrees that Target may make revisions and changes to winning design and Participant will not have the ability to review or approve any revisions.
- Each First Place Prize Winner agrees that their name and image may be used to give credit as the artist.
Acknowledgments: By participating in this Contest, Participants are confirming that they understand that submitted concepts may or may not be part of Target’s previous, current, or future business endeavors. By uploading a submission, Participant agrees to give Target a royalty free, irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, license for incidental use of their submission in any form, media or technology now known or later developed, only for historical, promotional, or marketing purposes (not for use on products) if they are winners in the competition.
Documents: All First Place Prize Winners will be required to execute and return a Release/Wavier Agreement and W-9. In addition, First Place Winners will be required to execute and return a Conveyance of Intellectual Property Agreement that will assign all rights in the winning design to Target. No prizes will be awarded to an individual until they have met these requirements. First Place Prize Winners are responsible for any prize taxes and will be issued an IRS form 1099 where required by law. First Place Prize Winners will be required to provide proof of enrollment at an HBCU.

Participation in the HBCU Mural Challenge is entirely voluntary and does not create an employment relationship with Target. Individuals who do choose to participate will not be compensated for the time spent on their submission or for their submitted artwork.
